We have all heard about coconut oil but why is everyone nuts for coconut oil?
Is it because of its amazing taste, flavor and versatility in the kitchen? Does it trump other oils as it does not go bad and contains no cholesterol? Is it simply because it is the ultimate beauty tool? Oh, but what about all of its amazing internal and external healing properties? Coconut oil has no limits and that is why everyone is nuts for coconut oil!
To understand exactly how coconut oil is made, I was able to locate a great YouTube video that breaks down the different stages that a coconut goes through before it becomes the white gold we love to consume.
Once coconut oil is prepared, it is then shipped to the countries where it is in the highest demand. Whole Foods has felt the coconut oil rush. As the article from USA Today states, a few years ago, coconut oil was virtually unheard of and many stores rarely stocked it but after Dr. Oz hailed coconut oil on his show as a weight-loss tool, everyone was suddenly interested in coconut oil.
Coconut oil comes in two forms: refined or unrefined. When refining coconut oil, there is a chemical process that occurs to bleach, clean and deodorize. The process is used to make unrefined coconut oil refined. This process takes out any impurities, dust and dirt that may get into the oil itself and remove it, it also creates less of a coconut smell, making the oil even more versatile than it was previously.
It is argued that some of the naturally occurring benefits in coconut oil are removed when it is refined but only in very small amounts. This is due to the high amounts of heat that are used when refining the coconut oil. Among many of its benefits, Alzheimers.net sheds light on its benefits from that may help patients with the disease. The reasoning behind it is because coconut oil contains ketones (ketones are a byproduct of the breakdown of fats in the body and ketones are important to brain health) and by boosting ketones in Alzheimer’s patients, some have seen a temporary increase in cognitive functioning.
One of the biggest supporters of the coconut oil and Alzheimer’s correlation is Dr. Mary Newport who is a physician that runs a Neonatal ward near Tampa, Florida. After her husband was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s at age 51, she was positive that she could help him. Dr. Newport learned all she could about the disease and she quickly learned ketones played very important role in the brain’s ability to function. In researching more, Dr. Newport found coconut oil has ketones and she quickly began adding coconut oil everyday into her husband’s diet. Within 2 weeks of him consuming coconut oil, as the amazing story from CBN on YouTube shows, Dr. Newport’s husband Steve simply showed “stunning improvement“.

Albeit coconut oil can be beneficial to the body internally, some of the external benefits are just as grand. Coconut oil can be used as a moisturizer for skin, hair, cuticles, and on diaper rashes for baby. Coconut oil can also be used as a makeup remover, natural lip moisturizer and it can help lighten age spots on the skin.

Picture this: you wake up on a lazy Saturday morning and want to make an easy breakfast and you happen to have coconut oil in your cabinet. For starters, let’s add a spoonful to your coffee instead of creamer for a kickstart to your day! Do not fear non-coffee drinkers! As Martha Stewart suggests below, you can always make your favorite, fresh fruit smoothie and toss in a teaspoon of coconut oil!
Next, let’s add another spoonful of coconut oil to a skillet and add a fresh egg. While the egg cooks, we can toast a slice of bread and use coconut oil instead of butter on top!
From personal experience, I can safely assure you, this is a delicious and fulfilling breakfast. Granted there may be a lot of coconut oil involved, but another great trait of coconut oil is that is it not overpowering in taste so it vibes well with many other flavors!
